etching glass

I’ve always liked the look of etched glass, so last Sunday I finally got around to etching some canister jars for our pantry.

Materials:
-glass jars, washed
-etching cream, I used Armour Etch
-printer mailing label sheets (or contact paper, painters tape, or other adhesive medium to create a stencil)
-rubbing alcohol
-xacto knife
-paint brush
-water

1. Prior to starting, quickly wipe down surface of jars with some rubbing alcohol so it will have time to dry before applying the stencil. Print out text onto your stencil medium. I found it easiest to print directly onto an 8.5x11 mailing label (filling up the whole page with my desired text) and then placing that directly onto the glass jar. Once you have the stencil on the jar, then very carefully cut out each letter using an xacto knife.

2. Using a paint brush, liberally apply etching cream. Take caution here. Etching cream is dangerous to the touch, so make sure it doesn’t come in contact with your skin. I also did this outside to avoid inhaling any fumes. Let sit for 5 minutes. [Note: we tried various times on a test jar to determine which worked best for our jars. I would recommend doing the same since the directions on the back of the etching cream said anywhere from 60 seconds to 5 minutes.]

3. Rinse thoroughly with water. I had a hose nearby ready to use. Again, make sure not to splash near your face and eyes. and then peel away your stencil.

4. Let dry and ta-da! Etched glass!! I gave my jars a good wash through the dishwasher before putting any food in the jars to get rid of any residual etching cream.

Now they’re filled and in my pantry :)

motivation

Am I too old to give myself stars for the days I work out?

I tried my first kickboxing class this week. and I finally got in to my first gravity class (it usually fills up within two minutes).

I can feel a difference in my strength, but this week I was still discouraged because my weight has not changed in the last 4 weeks! Some days I weigh more than I did when I started! Maybe it’s because I’m gaining muscle mass, but I sure hope the number starts going down…soon!

harvest balloon festival

G saw his very first hot air balloon this past Saturday. He was a little weary of the noise they made when firing the flames, but other than that he enjoyed people watching, trying his first funnel cake, and being outside.

last night's dinner: quinoa burgers

So so yummy! and so good for you. If you’re unfamiliar with quinoa, check it out. Lots and lots of protein.

Here’s the recipe. The only thing I might change the next time I make them is using only 2 eggs instead of the recommended 3. Definitely a recipe to keep in our rotation!

homemade playdough

Today I made some playdough for G. I used this recipe. It was very quick and easy, so it’s definitely something I’ll make more of in the future.

As for how G liked it? He threw it on the floor within 2 minutes. Maybe another day…

cake batter rice crispy treats

I found this recipe on pinterest and wanted to give it a try.

They were good, but in my opinion they could have been a little more cake batter flavored.

finished project!

All the circles came together finally! What do you think?

It was a gift for T's sister-in-law. This past weekend we went to NC for her baby shower and to visit with the rest of T's family. I always love it in NC. I even got to eat at my FAVORITE restaurant in Boone.

and don't be confused by the different colored circles. I made two, but haven't put together the actual mobile part for the first one. The pink one had an earlier deadline. They're so fun to make, I think I want to make one for myself with a rainbow of colors.

Hope you all have a great weekend!

circles

Lots and lots of circles.

Monday I started a new project that I spotted on pinterest, and I hope to get it finished this weekend! and if all goes well, then I plan on making another!

I'm a pinterest addict, but I find myself pinning tons of things and never accomplishing any of them (at least on the craft side). I've done my fair share of using recipes I've pinned. So my new goal is to make some of the crafty things I pin a reality.

Here's my current list of things I want to make:
crocheting hats
abacus
clock
paint chip artwork
yard jenga
DIY canvas prints

Do you have any projects you're working on? or a running list of projects to accomplish? Mine seems to always be growing at a much faster rate than I can cross them off.

Happy pinning and crafting!

bits from the weekend

On Saturday, G and I went to the yogurt tap and tried their dark chocolate, plain, and strawberry yogurt. Delicious!! and only 39 cents per ounce!

After a trip to Michaels and still on the neapolitan kick, I baked this yummy treat. Mine doesn't look as pretty on the inside (not sure how they got such a pink strawberry batter), but still tastes oh-so-good.

Hope you all had a great weekend!

Happy weekend everyone! So glad it's Friday...

I plan to take G to the library to read a few books and then stop by the yogurt tap for the first time.

Enjoy the weekend!

future herb garden

I saw this beautiful leaning planter on pinterest and knew it was something that I'd love to bring home.

If only I had a green thumb. Regardless of my gardening skills, I think this planter would be a perfect way to spruce up any space, indoor or outdoor, with a little greenery and color.

My perfect idea for this planter: an herb garden - basil, mint, cilantro, and parsley.

last night's dinner: couscous salad

Feeding my sweet babe has become a challenge recently (since his refusal to eat anything pureed) so I'm always looking for a simple meal that is kid friendly.

I came upon this couscous recipe and improvised a bit since I didn't have a few of the ingredients.

Greek Isreali Couscous Salad
**recipe from Weelicious

1 1/2 cups Israeli Couscous
3 tbsp Olive Oil, divided
2 cups Water
2 tbsp Lemon Juice
1/2 tsp Salt
1/2 cup Crumbled Feta Cheese
2 Persian Cucumbers, seeded & diced (or 1 cucumber)
1 Large Tomato, seeded & diced
1 tbsp Parsley, chopped

1. Place the couscous and 1 tbsp of olive oil in a pot and toast for 5 minutes over medium heat.
2. Add water and bring to a boil then simmer for 12 minutes.
3. Remove to a bowl and cool.
4. Pour in the remaining ingredients plus the 2 remaining tbsps of olive oil and stir to combine.
5. Serve.

NOTES:
1. I used Canadian whole wheat toasted couscous.
2. I only had about half a cucumber, so I added some corn to the salad.
3. I omitted the salt and parsley (didn't have fresh parsley on hand. This is why a small herb garden would be awesome).
4. Didn't have feta cheese (yum!) so I used grated parmesan cheese.

It turned out to be tasty, and the little G monkey actually ate about half his bowl! My dad and I added some tilapia to the dish, which made it even yummier. G didn't like the fish, so he just ate the couscous. But we're making progress! and it's another meal option for the little babe.

If you have any kid friendly recipes you'd like to share, leave me a comment! I'm always on the search for yummy food for the little one (and us parents too!).

best cookies ever!

When we were in FL we were introduced to the best chocolate chip cookie ever. and I finally got my hands on the recipe. So that's what I did on Sunday. These cookies are so delicious and chewy (they even stay chewy once completely cool, day after day).

If you bake them, let me know if you like them as much as I do. Best ever, in my opinion.

cake batter bark

This cake batter bark just looks so fun and festive. Chocolate + cake batter AND sprinkles, um HELLO! Definitely adding this to recipes that I must try in the near future. It's a good thing I have a few baby showers coming up, it will give me an excuse to make fun sweets like this.

happy 4th of july weekend!

Wishing everyone a safe and happy 4th of July weekend!

It's been a long week, so I'm definitely looking forward to the long weekend.

Summer = fruit in my mind. So here's a quick list of recipes I've pinned that scream summer to me, and might make good 4th of July treats.

++ this strawberry cream cake looks divine (pictured above)

++ you could make these citrus cookies to go along with the coasters I posted earlier today

++ pink lemonade cupcakes

++ these adorably cute watermelon shaped cookies

++ apple pie is always a winner, so what about apple pie ice cream. two good things must equal awesome.

++ the kids will love these strawberry milk whoopie pies (as will the adults I'm sure)

++ and for the adult cocktail hour, try these strawberry & peach vodka collins popsicles or these watermelon mojito popsicles

Happy weekend!!

Aren't these citrus coasters adorable? They just scream summer to me and I love the colors. They would make the perfect addition to any summer gathering.

ah, another watch

I'm really loving this new j.crew watch. It's very similar to the watch (which I never bought) that I mentioned a while back, except that it's a little more feminine. I love the thinner band and the silver face. Plus you can interchange the bands with all kinds of color. I'm definitely digging the seashore green. Now the only thing that I don't like is it's price tag of $98 dollars. Seriously? If anyone wants to buy me something fancy, feel free, but I can't bring myself to drop that kind of money for a watch. Because then I'll want to spend another $12 dollars for my color of choice.

I'll just wish and hope that it goes on sale. and if it does, then I'll be wishing and hoping that I get my hands on one.

new lens

Well, I'm the official owner of this beauty, the new Nikon 50mm f/1.8G lens. I saved the extra $$ from tutoring and splurged on one big ticket item. Not sure if it was as satisfying as buying a lot of things, but I'm totally convinced that I'll enjoy this purchase so much that it will be worth every penny invested. Now I just have to take it for a test drive :)

last night's dinner: mango quinoa salad

MANGO QUINOA SALAD

The mango adds a nice flavor to this dish. and with the black beans and quinoa, it's quite tasty.

Next time around, I think I'll leave off the vinaigrette dressing. A bit too much for me. So if you try to make this, maybe cut back on the amount of vinegar (just my opinion).

happy weekend!

Hi y'all. It's Friday! The day is always good, no matter what. Work is even good on a Friday. Any fun and exciting plans for the weekend?

I was given some home grown blueberries from a co-worker, so I plan to break out the ice cream machine and make some blueberry ice cream. Then on Sunday I get to see two of my besties.

Have a happy weekend!

bits from the weekend

Saturday I tutored algebra and then made these eggrolls for our block party. Then on Sunday I made some special pancakes for father's day, G ate some cheerios with milk, and I finally got around to printing, cutting, and writing thank you notes for G's birthday party (bad mama for being so tardy with the thank you notes). Hope you all had a great weekend!

happy father's day weekend!

Hope you all have a fabulous weekend! Any exciting plans?

I'll be earning some extra $$ tutoring, and then we'll be attending our neighborhood block party. Sunday we don't have any real plans, except maybe some father's day pancakes.

Wishing you all well and enjoy this weekend with your family.

xo,
L

P.S. Do you find it more satisfying to save money to purchase 1 big ticket item? or purchase many smaller ticket items? I can't decide what I want to do with this extra $$ from tutoring. Save to purchase this lens that I want? or purchase many smaller things that I want - like this, this, and this. or maybe this new sewing machine? or do the smart thing, and pay off more debt? But what's the fun in that!

I made these donut muffins while Tim pulled the Subaru engine. and then I finished the weekend by finally putting together G's mobile. It needs at least one more ornament to help fill it out, but I'll add that one a little later.
